Lead us from despair to hope, from fear to trust.
Lead us from hate to love, from war to peace.
Let peace fill our hearts, our world, our universe
--adapted from the Upanishads by Satish Kumar
Memorial Day began after the Civil War, when women decorated the graves of fallen soldiers. It's interesting that while this observance began in the north it was soon also taken up in the south, so that no matter what side a soldier had fought on his loss was recognized. Today Memorial Day offers us an opportunity to remember all those who have been lost to war and violence-- from soldiers and police officers to the innocent victims of warfare abroad and violence in our streets at home. It also offers us an opportunity to recommit ourselves to peacemaking.
As we look toward Memorial day on Monday, our sadhana theme this week will be "remembering those lost to war/committing ourselves to peace." Take some time from your weekend activities to join us at 5:45 on Sunday for this time of remembrance and reflection.
